In March this year, Canada and the EU announced improvements to CETA. They are responding to current geopolitical calls and the need to diversify trade relations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who takes office in 2025, is pushing a national policy to diversify trading partners, pursue strategic partnerships and increase supply chain resilience in response to geopolitical uncertainty and trade tensions with the US.

In this context, on 5 March 2026, Canada and the European Union negotiated a series of improvements to the bilateral trade agreement CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement).

A key part of the updated agreement is the agreement on mutual recognition of architects’ qualifications. It is this that greatly facilitates entry into the lucrative construction market. The two partners will also begin negotiations to incorporate a comprehensive digital trade agreement into the existing treaty, reflecting the growing importance of the digital economy in international trade relations.

The proposed improvements are also intended to simplify trade and reduce costs in the pharmaceutical sector. According to CBC News, the enhanced protocols for pharmaceutical manufacturing are designed to reduce duplicate controls and associated costs for businesses on both sides. The revisions will also strengthen investment protection, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses, and make it easier for them to engage more securely in bilateral trade and investment.

What does the new agreement mean for Czech companies?
