RoboTwin: Czechs who teach robots to learn like humans

Programming robots without complex coding? That’s exactly what the startup RoboTwin focuses on. Their technology allows a production worker to simply teach a robot a task. It is enough if one shows the robot the procedure once. The startup, which went through the JICbooster program, subsequently succeeded in the prestigious EIC Accelerator – as one of the few selected European deep-tech projects.

Their goal is quite simple: they want people in the factory – painters, sanders or assemblers – to be able to easily move the robot without having to understand the programming. Leading up to that simple goal is a very complex deep-technology, which RoboTwin’s founders started working on as students in 2021.

David Polák, Megi Mejdrechová and Ladislav Dvořák come from three different industries and first met during a study stay in Singapore.“My master’s thesis was followed bythe first idea we tried out in a European startup programme – and straight away with success,” recalls Megi Mejdrechová, co-founder and CTO of the company. Their idea won the first prize. And since the prize money could not be awarded to an individual, they set up a company – and so RoboTwin was born.

A solution unique in its simplicity

There are a few (units) of similar solutions on the market. But RoboTwin is unique because of how simple the solution is. “Most competitors require the installation of additional equipment and a special room where the robot’s movements are recorded. We put everything we need into compact devicethat attaches directly to the tool – for example, a paint gun or a grinder,” explains Megi Mejdrechova, making learning for robots easier , more flexible and on the job .

From JICbooster to European success

RoboTwin joined JICbooster when they already had their first product but needed experience in business and strategic decision making.“Weare all young and understandably had no business experience. Thanks to JIC, we had a coach with whom we consulted on sales and strategic steps,” saysMegi Mejdrech.

JIC also played a big role in the subsequent preparation for the EIC Accelerator – Europe’s most prestigious program for deep-tech startups. RoboTwin won it as one of the forty successful projects out of almost a thousand applications. “Atthe Velvet Innovation conference, we met a coach from Finland who helped us with a translation. It was really a fateful meeting. Plus, JIC helped us with the interview training itself – they set up a mock round where they played the jury and asked tough questions. This made us feel much more confident,” addsMegi Mejdrechová.

Tools for people, not instead of people

Robotwin is now developing the next generation of its solution with the EIC Accelerator. While until now the robot has learned from the human’s movements, it will now be able to create the program itself – just from a 3D model of the product. The startup aims to make the introduction of robots into production even faster and easier. “Automation is supposed to be about people – we don’t want to replace workers, but put a tool in their hands that makes their job easier. And that is our vision for the future,” concludes Megi Mejdrechová.
